Getting known in the music business these days is easier in some ways and harder in others. Hot new bands can make use of internet sites such as My Space and Facebook and have their own web sites. Anyone interested can log on and listen to tracks and find out where the band is playing. Many new acts have built up a loyal fan base in this way, leading to record sales and sell out tours. The downside is that there is a lot of competition out there.

Newcomers to the scene have to stand out therefore. So what makes a hot new band? Record labels and promoters are looking for that spark of originality. If a band gets noticed at a festival or their management promotes their records well, radio airplay will follow and bring success. The music press is tipping hot new bands for 2009 and one is struck by the variety of musical styles out there. American and British bands are both tipped for success in the near future.

New York based Heartsrevolution describe themselves as Thrash Metal and cite one of their influences as The Libertines. Their lead singer is an attractive lady known as Lo. The other members are Ben on electronics and Prince Terrence on drums. Their single, titled C.Y.O.A (Choose Your Own Adventure) has caused some excitement. Another hot new band from New York has made a big impression with their live performances. Brian, Eric, David, Morgan, Andy, and Pablo, known collectively as Apes and Androids put on a show involving face paint, giant skulls, metal costumes, and cheerleaders. They have even incorporated a Korean Drum Circle. The electro psychedelic outfit’s debut album is called Blood Moon.

British bands are not to be outdone and Golden Silvers are off to an auspicious beginning, having played at the 2008 Glastonbury Festival as a result of winning the Emerging Talent Competition. Based in London, the bands’ influences include Soft Machine and The Miracles. Gwilym Gold sings lead vocals, plays keyboards and writes the songs. Ben Moorhouse is on bass and Alexis Nunez is the drummer. Their brand of Indie Pop was well received when they appeared in Tokyo and they have supported the Mystery Jets on tour. The hot new band’s first single is called Arrows of Eros.

Newcastle in the north of England is the home of Little Comets. Robert, Michael, Mark and Matt have approached live gigs in an unusual way. Instead of the usual clubs and pubs, they have performed shows in lecture theatres, shopping malls, and on trains and trams. Another band from the north of England is causing a stir. Dinosaur Pile Up are from Leeds and the three members are Matt Bigland on lead vocals and guitar, Tom Dornford on bass and Steve Wilson on drums. Bigland is the driving force, writing all the songs, in a grunge style, reminiscent of Nirvana.

The Yeah Yous are based in London and their radio friendly guitar pop is gaining them lots of fans. Formed in April 2007, this hot new duo consists of Nick Ingram singing lead and playing guitar and Michael Kintish on piano and vocals. They like to harmonize and are big fans of the Beach Boys and Queen.
